Build-a-box lets customers assemble their own subscription boxes by selecting products from your catalog. You set the minimum and maximum number of products, and customers choose what they want in their recurring deliveries.

Business plan required

Build-a-box is available on the Business plan or higher. Upgrade your plan in Plan & billing to unlock this feature.

What is build-a-box?

Build-a-box is a subscription model where customers pick their own products instead of receiving a pre-selected set. You define:
  • Which products are available for selection
  • Minimum and maximum product count
  • Discount percentage (optional)
  • Which selling plan group applies
  • Whether the box is enabled
Customers then visit your build-a-box page, select their products within your constraints, and subscribe.

Create a build-a-box

1

Go to Build-a-box

Click OffersBuild-a-boxCreate box.
2

Name the box group

Enter a descriptive name for this build-a-box option (e.g., “Custom Coffee Box”, “Build Your Snack Box”).
3

Set product limits

Configure:
  • Minimum product count: The fewest products a customer must select
  • Maximum product count: The most products a customer can select
4

Add a discount (optional)

Enter a discount percentage to apply to the box. Leave blank for no discount.
5

Select a selling plan group

Choose which subscription plan governs the billing frequency for this box. The customer subscribes using the selected plan’s schedule.
6

Enable the box

Toggle Enabled to make the box available to customers. You can disable it later to hide it without deleting the configuration.
7

Save the box

Click Save to create the build-a-box. Customers can now access it via the build-a-box URL.

Manage build-a-box options

The Build-a-box page shows all your box configurations with:
  • Group name
  • Minimum / Maximum product counts
  • Enabled status
  • Link to the customer-facing box builder

Edit a box

Click Edit next to any box to change the settings. You can update:
  • Group name
  • Product count limits
  • Discount percentage
  • Selling plan group
  • Enabled status

Delete a box

Click Delete to remove a box configuration. This does not cancel existing subscriptions—customers who already built a box remain active.

Preview the box

Click the Preview link to see the customer-facing build-a-box interface. This is the page where customers select their products.

How build-a-box works

  1. You create a build-a-box configuration with product limits and a discount
  2. Customers visit the build-a-box page (via a link you provide)
  3. Customers select products from the available catalog, within your min/max limits
  4. Customers choose a subscription frequency (from the selling plan group)
  5. Customers check out, creating a subscription contract with their chosen products
  6. The selected products are delivered on each billing cycle

Build-a-box vs bundles

  • Build-a-box: Customers choose the products. They have flexibility within your limits.
  • Bundle: You choose the products. Customers subscribe to your fixed product set.
Both features require the Business plan or higher. Learn about bundles →

Box settings

Click Box settings on the Build-a-box page to configure global settings for all build-a-box experiences, such as default text, colors, or behavior.
Build-a-box works well for subscription boxes where customers have preferences (e.g., coffee varieties, snack flavors, beauty products). It gives customers control while still driving recurring revenue.
Customers can change the products in their box through the customer portal after subscribing, if you’ve enabled product swapping in the portal settings.
