# Active Subscriber customer tag

> Automatic customer tagging for segmentation and integrations

Appfox Subscriptions automatically tags customers with **Active Subscriber** when they have an active subscription. This tag helps you segment customers for email campaigns, content gating, and other integrations.

## How it works

The **Active Subscriber** tag is managed automatically:

* **Tag is added** when a customer's subscription becomes active (when a new subscription is created as active, or when a paused subscription is resumed)
* **Tag is removed** when a customer pauses or cancels their subscription
* **Failed payments do not remove the tag** — customers keep the Active Subscriber tag while their subscription is in a failed billing state

The tag is applied and removed through Shopify's subscription webhooks. You don't need to enable or configure anything.

## Use it with other apps

The **Active Subscriber** tag appears in the customer's Shopify profile, so you can target it in other apps and integrations:

### Email marketing (Klaviyo, Mailchimp, etc.)

Create segments based on the **Active Subscriber** tag to:

* Send exclusive offers or early access to active subscribers
* Build win-back campaigns for customers who no longer have the tag
* Personalize email content based on subscription status

In Klaviyo, create a segment with the condition **Shopify Tags contains "Active Subscriber"**.

### Content gating (Locksmith, etc.)

Grant access to subscriber-only content, products, or collections by checking for the **Active Subscriber** tag.

In Locksmith, create a lock that requires the customer to have the **Active Subscriber** tag to access specific pages or products.

### Shopify Flow automations

Use the **Active Subscriber** tag as a condition in Shopify Flow workflows to trigger actions when customers become subscribers or when their subscription ends.

## Known limitation

If a customer has multiple active subscriptions and pauses or cancels one of them, the **Active Subscriber** tag is currently removed even though they still have other active subscriptions. This will be addressed in a future update.

<Tip>
The tag updates automatically when Shopify sends the subscription status change, usually within moments.
